The Curse of Caste

I read the article “ ‘Caste’ and ‘Race’ between Delhi and Durban” by Wajahat Ahmad (GK 03-08-07) It is really great to see such articles exposing the myth of racial superiority. The author has written about the Racism in South Africa but Racism is a global phenomenon and apart from South Africa its traces can still be found in all Western countries including the most advanced US and Britain.

Racism has indeed brought a lot of disasters to humankind. The hatred which is felt against other races is responsible for the majority of conflicts, clashes and civil wars around the world. For instance, “Racism” brought to the Africa Continent for long years violence, clashes, wars, starvation and misery. Until the 1950s, the people of this continent suffered from all the forms of violence and racist policies which the imperialist countries imposed. The concept of Racism suggests that one particular race is, either physically or mentally or both, superior to another and that it is unnecessary for the superior one to have feelings of mercy, compassion and respect for the other.

The foundation of the modern Racism was actually laid by the Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Some people who have heard of “the theory of evolution” think that it is only concerned with the biological field. The theory of evolution, however, represents more than this. Not merely a biological concept, it is the underpinning of many philosophies that hold the masses under their influence. Darwin’s theory had a significant dimension. Darwin based the development of living beings, including human beings, on the term “the struggle for survival.” According to him, there is a fierce struggle, a constant conflict, going on in nature. In this struggle, the strong always defeat the weak and thus progress occurs. Darwin maintained that this “struggle for survival” is also true for human races.

The leaders of Nazism and Fascism were greatly inspired by the Darwin’s theory of evolution. One of the founders and the leader of the German Nazi Party, Adolph Hitler, was an ambitious and aggressive man who based part of his outlook on life on Racism. Hitler firmly believed in the superiority of the Aryan “master race” and that this was the race that would lead all other nations. Also the principle features of Fascism are dictatorial state rule, and an aggressive foreign policy. But alongside all of these, its really dominant characteristic is Racism. When we look at the Nazi ideology, in particular, we can see that it is Racism that makes Fascism what it is. The Nazis set out with the dream of establishing the hegemony of the Aryan race, which they believed to be superior, over the whole world, an idea on which all their policies and social measures were based. Racism was also the fundamental ideology of other fascist regimes, such as those of Mussolini , even if not to the extent it was in Nazism. Mussolini suggested that the Romans who had governed the Roman Empire were a “superior race,” and that the Italians, as their descendants, also possessed this superior nature. The conquest of Ethiopia was based on this notion of the superior race, and that the black skinned Ethiopians need submit to the Italians, in accordance to what was perceived as a natural racial hierarchy. Franco made similar claims for the Spanish.

In the holy Qur’an, Allah declares that various nations and tribes exist so that “people might come to know each other.” The diversity of nations, races, tribes and languages is a beauty peculiar to Allah’s creation. These peculiarities are all the distinctive creation of Allah with countless beauties, purposes and subtle secrets within them. The Qur’an mentions: “Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come to know each other. The noblest among you in Allah’s sight is the one with the most taqwa of Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware”. (Surat al-Hujurat: 13)

The above verse is perfectly clear. No matter by what criteria human beings are judged in this world, in God’s eyes, superiority consists of closeness to Him, and fear of Him. An individual or group which chooses to see one race as superior, or tries to demonstrate it to be so, is deceiving itself. Further the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab over an Arab and a white person has no superiority over a black person, nor a black person over a white person - except by piety and good actions”.

Regarding Caste system although there are many movements for caste reform and offenses against “untouchables” are now banned by law, caste alliances remain a powerful political and social force in India. And the caste system still retains great strength in the countryside, where the majority of India’s people live. However, Urbanization and industrialization have increased Indian social mobility and thereby modified the caste system. But Modernization and economic development have just tended to modify the caste system and has not eradicated it completely. But if we want to eradicate the curses of caste and race from our society completely, then it is only possible by living by the principles of the right religion and making others obey them.

Science & Superstitions

This is in reference to the article "Science versus Superstitions" by "Nida Rafiq Shiekh" (GK 07-01-08). The author has really given a good comparison between science and superstitions. The growth of scientific knowledge and intellect have certainly diminished the belief in superstitions but it hasn't eradicated them completely. Scientific knowledge is based on reason but superstitions are completely based upon ignorance and prove as a great hinderance in the way to progress of the society, nation and ultimately mankind. Superstitious beliefs have resulted in a lot of misconceptions and regressions among the masses.

All of us have to correspond to the fact that science has just helped to relieve mankind of superstitions but so far it hasn't been successful in annihilating them completely. Even Niels Bohr, a great scientist had hanged a horse-shoe outside his laboratory door which clearly proves his belief in the superstitions. Superstition is nothing but an irrational belief which arises due to ignorance or sometimes due to fear. Huge masses of people even today believe in Astrology which is a pseudoscience. But the major and the most significant cause of the rise of these unpleasant circumstances is the lack of faith in Allah (SWT).

It's not science alone which can put an end to all the superstitions because science itself is silent on many major issues governing this world like the creation of life, etc. but its the faith in Allah through which we can overcome and supercede all the superstitions. Religion is the primary source for providing man with the most accurate knowledge regarding the creation of the universe and of life Therefore, science will advance speedily only if it is guided by the Qur'an, adopting its revelations, for only then may science adhere to way of God.There are hundreds of scientists which had a complete faith in God because there comes a stage in science when a person is left with no other alternative except to belive in a Divine Creator i.e. The God. Johannes Kepler, Samuel Morse, Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, James Prescott Joule, Louis Pasteur, J J Thomson, Maxwell, Max Planck, John Dalton are some of the many examples of great scientists who had a staunch belief in God. Albert Einstein, who is one of the most important scientists of the last century, was also known for his faith in God. He did not hesitate to defend that science could not exist without religion. As he put it: "I cannot conceive of a genuine scientist without that profound faith. The situation may be expressed by an image: science without religion is lame" (Science, Philosophy and Religion, New York 1941). Each scientific discovery points to a perfect design, order, and plan, in every part of nature, living or non-living. Themselves testifying to this truth, many scientists have seen that the design of the entire universe is the work of a superior Wisdom, and have gone on to defend the Fact of Creation, recognizing that everything has been created by the Almighty God. Today, there are many respected academic organizations in the West, particularly in the USA, which have been established by believing scientists. These institutions work to make clear that scientific evidence confirms the perfect design of the universe.

In the 7th century, when the Qur'an was revealed, Arab society had many superstitious and groundless beliefs where scientific issues were concerned. Lacking the technology to examine the universe and nature, these early Arabs believed in legends inherited from past generations. They supposed, for example, that mountains supported the sky above. They believed that the earth was flat and that there were high mountains at its both ends. It was thought that these mountains were pillars that kept the vault of heaven high above. However all these superstitious beliefs of Arab society were eliminated with the Qur'an. In Sura Sad, verse 2, it was said: "God is He who raised up the heavens without any support..."(The Qur'an, 38:2). This verse invalidated the belief that the sky remains above because of the mountains. In many othersubjects, important facts were revealed at a time when no one could have known them.

If we follow the teachings of the Qur'an, apart from eradicating the superstitions completely, we will also be the leaders of science and intellect because it is the Qur'an which leads the way to the science as many of the wonders of science were declared in the Qur'an more than 1400 years ago! About a thousand verses of the Qur'an are just dealing with modern science. In all other fields of endeavor, the way to be followed in the scientific field is again the "way" commanded by God in the Qur'an. As God proclaims, "This Qur'an guides to the most upright Way..." (Surat al- Isra: 9)

Da'wah on The Internet

In the modern times Internet is one of the most powerful means of mass media. Internet is used by one billion people worldwide. So internet can be turned into a powerful tool for E-dawah. The western people say that "Islam needs reformation". Islam doesn't need any reformation but "It needs to be taught in a scientific way". There are innumberable Islamic websites floating in cyberspace which provide enlightening information on Islam and its various aspects.

There are thousands of Islamic websites in the cyberspace. In our country a large number of Islamic websites are uploaded regularly. Besides providing information about various aspects of Islam, many websites have separate sections for removing the mis-conceptions among the non-muslims. Some websites also have discussion forums and online chatting specially for those who are interested in knowing more about Islam.

From the past one year I am collecting the details about Islamic websites and my efforts have proved successful upto a great extent. I have listed below some of the websites and their details which I found very useful for Dawah work:

1) http://www.irf.net/This is the website of Islamic Research Foundation headed by Dr.Zakir Naik. Books authored by Ahmed Deedat, Dr.Zakir Naik, etc. can be downloaded from this site. It also provides an online Dawah training for an effective Dawah. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) provided by the website are very useful. This website also has a children's section and Ladies wing.

2)http://www.sultan.org/, http://www.islammessage.com/These two websites offer free downloading of various Islamic Literature, books on Prophet Muhammad (SAW)'s life, The Quran and the Hadith, etc. Besides books a number of important articles can be downloaded from these sites.

3)http://www.ahya.org/, http://www.quransunnah.org/Both are these are websites of Salafis. From these websites you can download hundreds of articles and important audio lectures by eminent scholars of Islam. You can also subscribe to AHYA's mailing list.

4) http://www.fatwa.com/This website provides online fatwas from a slew of ulemas all over the world. You ask a fatwa on any issue and they provide one, many a time within hours.

10)http://www.islamicvoice.com/,http://www.youngmuslimdigest.com/, http://www.milligazette.com/These are the websites which provide news from the Islamic world as well as features and articles on a slew of subjects related to the community(Ummah) and Islamic ideology.

The Dawah websites indeed provide enlightening information on Islam but these sites can only be a supplement, a means for Dawah and not an end in itself. Without human touch the Dawah can never be complete. If the human touch was not required, Almighty Allah would have only sent the holy book(Quraan) and not the Prophet Muhammad(SAW). Practice is more important than mere preaching. Thus until and unless the efforts through the internet is supplemented with the personal touch, the real purpose of Dawah cannot be achieved.

During the time of Prothet Muhammad(SAW), it was his examplary character, that influenced the most hostile tribes of Arabia and led them to embrace Islam. There was no internet or these hi-tech communication techniques then, but still the effect of Dawah was so powerful. Our generation has innumberable means of communication and we must make an intelligent use of these to propagate the message of Islam and to remove the "Islamophobia" from the minds of people.

The Time To Seek Forgiveness in Laylatul Qadr

This is the night when believers bow before their Lord, seeking bounty, blessing and forgiveness

"We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power: And what will explain to thee what the night of power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission, on every errand: Peace!...This until the rise of morn” (Al Qur'an 97:1-5)

Laylat-ul-Qadr (The Night of Honour or Power) is the night in which the Quran was revealed. During this night, the whole of the Qur'an was revealed from Lawh-e-Mahfooz (The Preserved Tablet) to the lowest heaven known as Bayt-ul-Izzah (House of Honour). Allah (SWT) informs us about the importance and value of this one night in the Qur'an. To emphasize on its importance and value, Allah (SWT) says that it is better than a thousand months in order to indicate the auspiciousness and the virtuousness of this night. This night is so much significant because in this night the decision of blessing man with guidance was taken. We are not aware of when the night exactly falls but the Ahadith (traditions) of Muhammad (SAW) inform us that Laylat-ul-Qadr is one among the odd nights of the last 10 nights of Ramadhan i.e. the nights of the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th. Narrated by Aisha (RA), Muhammad (SAW) said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." – (Bukhari Vol.3, Book 32).

This night opened the gates for the holy Qur'an and accordingly every year in the month of Ramadhan this night is celebrated to commemorate the revelation of the Qur'an. We have to worship to the best of our capacity and capabilities all night long in these odd nights. This Night is very special, full of mercy in which Allah forgives the committed Muslim who sincerely bow down before Him. Narated by Abu Huraira, Muhammad (SAW) said, "Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven." – (Bukhari Vol.1, Book 2, no. 34) This Hadith is really very important in conveying to us the clear message that worship must be done with clear intentions, conviction and the will to seek the good pleasure of Allah only. Everyone amongst us wants that our sins be forgiven. Nobody is innocent. All of us commit mistakes and sins both knowingly and unknowingly. So this night is indeed the best opportunity to erase all our sins in just one night!

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to worship to a far greater extent during the last ten days of the Ramadhan: Aisha reported that when the last ten nights began Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) kept awake at night (for prayer and devotion), would wake up his family, and prepared himself to observe prayer (with more vigour). – (Muslim Book 6, No. 2643) As followers of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), we must try to walk upon his footsteps and do what he did. Let's take a break from all the mundane talks, wants and needs and spend this night only worshipping our Lord, the Most High.

The signs of the night of the Qadr:

1) The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) described the morning of the night of Qadr so that the Muslims can know which night it is. Ubayy said: "On the morning of the night of Qadr the sun would rise without any beams; (it is like) a wash basin until it rises." (Sahih Muslim)

2) Abu Hurairah said: "We mentioned the night of Qadr to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and he said: "Which of you remembers when the moon rises and it is like half a bowl." (Sahih Muslim)

3) Ibn Abbaas said that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "The night of Qadr is a night of generosity and happiness, it is not hot, and neither is it cold. The sun comes up in its morning weak, reddish." (Tabaranee, Ibn Khuzaimah and Bazzaar).

What to do on these odd nights?

1. Practice Itikaf as our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to do. He used to go to the mosque in the last ten days of Ramadhan for Itikaf. Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. – (Muslim Book 6, #2638)

2. Do loads and loads of Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) i.e. Recitation of the Quran, delving into its meanings and pondering over the message of Quran. Pray more Salah and glorify Allah.

3. This Night is to get our sins erased, so ask Allah (SWT) to bestow upon us His mercy and forgive our sins. Cry your heart out and ask for forgiveness! Pray for our Muslim brothers who are suffering. Pray for your relatives, friends, loved ones; pray for everyone!

4. It is also recommended to make extensive supplication on this night. ’A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported that she asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "O Messenger of Allah! If I knew which night is Laylatul-Qadr, what should I say during it?" And he instructed her to say: "Allahumma innaka `afuwwun tuh.ibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee" (O Allah! You are Oft-Forgiving, and you love forgiveness. So forgive me). (Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Majah and At-Tirmithi).

5. A menstruating woman cannot naturally offer Salah. But there is no need to be disheartened that this natural biological process has caused you to miss out worshiping in these odd nights. Allah (SWT) knows that such women cannot pray and He looks at the intentions and you must have the urge in your heart to perform Salah. Recite whichever Surahs you learn by heart, long or short. It's your intentions that matter. And you still can recite the Quran from memory, make dua, listen to the Quran, seek more knowledge about Islam etc.

There is a lot that one can do during this auspicious night. Do as much worship as you can and continuously seek Allah's forgiveness. All the nights of the year we spend in sleeping and feeling lazy to get up for Tahajjud (midnight prayers) and Fajr (early morning prayers). At least we can spend these five nights in worship out of all the rest.

The last days of the Ramadhan are really most important. And it’s during these days that one might encounter Laylat ul Qadr and have all his past sins forgiven by Allah, the most merciful. The Laylat ul Qadr is a very important occasion in Islam. Every Muslim must yearn for it and experience it. Laylat ul Qadr is indeed a the Night of Mercy, Night of Blessing, Night of Peace and a Night of Guidance. So we ask Allah to give us the ability to change our souls during this blessed moth of Ramadhan and not to be of those who are deprived of His mercy and forgiveness. Indeed Allah is the One who hears us and responds to us always. Let's take a vacation for Allah. We take a break from our jobs for almost everything in life. So let’s take a short break and focus upon worshipping our Allah (SWT) and thanking him with utmost conviction.

Why Discriminate?

This is in reference to the article "Those Four Days" By "Nuzhat" (GK 19-09-08). I am really very grateful to GK for bringing up such articles that depict our real social scenario. The author has indeed done a marvellous job by sharing her true experience about gender discrimination which is still widely prevalent in this so called 'modern' society. I have also been myself witness to many such cases of gender discrimination wherein a male child is given preference over the female. This philosophy is based on the fake concept that the male child can support the parents in the old age and can keep the family name alive. But I would like to question that Whats the guarantee for this? Many a time it has been found that the girl child proves boon and the so called 'superior' boy proves bane to the parents.

I have personally experienced that the discriminating parents take less interest in their daughters because they think 'Ladki to Paraya Maal hai' and spend lavishly only on sons and leave their daugters in lurch. These discriminated girls often suffer from split personality and perpetual mental trauma which numbs their mental capabilities which further leads to many harmful consequences like drug addiction, etc. The best and the foremost solution to get out of this problem of gender discrimination is to follow the divine and sublime teachings of our Islam which tell us to treat children equally. The people may consider a boy superior in their eyes than a girl but the Qur'an says that both are an equal blessing:"To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He bestows (children) male or female According to His will, Or He bestows both males and females, And He leaves barren whom He will: For He is full of knowledge and Power" (Surah Shura V. 49-50).

In spite of the teachings of the Qur'an ' which guides to the most upright way' (Surah Isra:9), people still fail to realize that children are bestowed according to the plan of Allah (SWT). And both male and female children are blessings from our Allah. Islam has given equal rights to males and females without any discrimination. Everybody is equal in the eyes of the Lord, so why to discriminate on the grounds of gender? The Qur'an says that,"Whoever works righteousness, Man or woman, and has faith, Verily, to him will We give a life that is good and pure, And We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions" (Surah Nahl V. 97). So according to Qur'an what actually matters are our deeds and actions and not our gender.

Morever, Islam has encouraged the bringing up of a female child and has attached a great reward to it. A tradition of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) goes like this: "A lady along with her two daughters came to me (Ayesha RA) asking me (for some alms), but she found nothing with me (Ayesha RA) except one date which i gave to her and she divided it between her two daughters, and then she got up and went away. Then the Prophet (SAW) came in and I (Ayesha RA) informed him about this story. He said, "Whoever is in charge of these daughters and treats them generously, then they will act as a shield for him from the (Hell) fire" (Sahih Bukhari Vol.8,Book 73,Hadith No.24).

To conclude, the Islamic teachings and morals can only save us from various social ills and its only through Islam that we can put an end to the ongoing social problems. When we will feel the essence of Islam in our hearts, only then will our behaviour become positive and its only after that we will be able to treat our children equally. The gender discrimination is a curse upon our society and above all it paralyzes the funtion of the society to a large extent. Lets make the Qur'an our guide and save ourselves from the cheap mentality of gender discrimination:"We have sent down the Book to you making all things clear and as guidance and mercy and good news for Muslims" (Surah Nahl V.89)
